Bristol architecture practice tangentarchitecture is the umbrella that links ‘tangentstudio’ a ‘concept to building’ architectural service, with ‘tangentfield’ an architectural field-research studio developing methodologies through playfully, resourceful design and architecture event workshops, locally and globally.
At ‘tangentarchitecture’ set up by Sally Daniels director of tangentstudio and architect Marcus Toop, we are interested in redefining the design and building process as a valuable event rather than solely a means to an end.
At ‘tangentfield’, partnered with the Architecture and Planning Department at UWE, we are researching and exploring collective design, through workshops and performance related events. Architecture workshops allow hands-on experience of materiality and one to one modelling. As a learning/bonding exercise they break down barriers in community groups or with site neighbours and planners. This collective process opens up new opportunity for design ideas.
At ‘tangentstudio’ our base, we deliver architectural services and move designs developed with tangentfield through planning building control and onto site. Were budget and time allow, the tangentfield process will continue hand in glove with the building creation.
A building is never a finished object, it is a vessel that holds life at a that moment and needs to bend, change and anticipate the growth and changes of the places around.
We work with, communities, expert makers, builders, educators, students, and enthusiastic participants. Together we share ideas, celebrate teamwork and challenge the limits of pre-conception and expectation.
This is not about exploring design collectively not autocratically. This gives building an opportunity to fit into their context and have meaning and connectedness, rather than statement and gesture.

tangent architecture is a bristol based architecture & design practice
We are developing alternative ways of working with individuals and communities in the procurement of temporary and permanent environments
And do this through live research in the form of workshops and events, and collaborative practice.
We have a ‘field‘ area for live research in the form of workshops and events, and a ’studio‘ space for putting research into practice
both devising and sharing adventures in playful resourcefulness
